Michael has diverse forensic experience, attained across a more than ten year history within correctional services and private consultancy. Michael has worked extensively with youth and adult offender populations, assessing and treating risk and offence behaviour, including sexual offending. Treatment experience includes interventions for both male and female, including intellectually disabled and indigenous offenders, aimed at exploring the risk and needs of such individuals and reducing their potential to re-offend.
Michael regularly conducts psycho-legal assessments and reporting for major criminal law firms, including matters that are legally aided. Michael maintains a professional portfolio in the clinical and actuarial assessment of risk, along with observing ongoing close professional and client relationships within youth and adult correctional services.
Michael consults across a wide range of sectors in the treatment and assessment of psychological conditions. Michael has developed, and is director of his own private treatment and consultancy practice. He is linked with a range of medical and community mental health services, liaising frequently with general practitioners and psychiatrists in the treatment and management of mutual clientele. Michael also regularly treats adolescent and adult clients for self-referred personal matters, including treatment according to Medicare Better Access to Mental Health, for which he is a registered provider.
Michael primarily adopts a cognitive behavioural orientation to intervention, incorporating acceptance and commitment approaches, including schema principles. Michael's counselling appointments are in high demand. Michael's clients are managed and communicated with directly by himself.
Youth are a demographic often overlooked, and an age group frequently labelled by treating practitioners as too difficult or complex to engage. Indeed adolescence is a period representing transformation, including episodes of uncertainty and unpredictability. Michael is highly skilled at engaging young people, and through considerable experience in working within Youth Justice settings, is particularly skilled in assisting young people demonstrating high risk behaviours.
Michael places emphasis on motivational aspects in working with young people, appreciating that it is not uncommon for youth to be pre-contemplative to difficulties that confront them. Michael works closely with young people in exploring emotions, thoughts, behaviours, and considering change.
